Pettis Spring

Natural spring heads, historically recognized in the Red Hills region. The spring heads once fed cool groundwater from the Floridan aquifer into the river and surrounding lowlands, and were a popular local gathering and swimming place in the early 20th century — even forming the centerpiece of a Prohibition-era country club complete with an Olympic-sized concrete pool cooled by the spring waters. Recent reports indicate the vents are now capped.
